Lloyd’s Register Energy: Oil firms must focus on safety and innovation

Lloyd’s Register Energy Oil firms must focus on safety and innovation

Lloyd’s Register Energy is challenging oil and gas companies to improve their approach to safety, performance and technical innovation to secure the world’s changing energy supply in a sustainable way, from reservoir and refinery to beyond.

Bjørn Inge Bakken, SVP of Lloyd’s Register’s Consulting business said: “With a changing energy mix and increased challenges around innovative exploration and production techniques, the industry cannot afford to be complacent when it comes to safety.”

The global safety and certification organisation says industry must adapt to anticipated future market and technology developments, but that it must not lose sight of safety.

“All stakeholders have a responsibility and interest to assure the safety and reliability of new, ‘cleaner’ and more sustainable energy sources, to meet with increasing energy demands and government targets worldwide for reducing carbon emissions,” said Bakken.

At ONS 2014 in Stavanger Lloyd’s Register Energy will be reinforcing its commitment to operators by promoting more awareness and understanding of how assets should be managed with new technologies introduced that help to secure upcoming energy sources to meet future energy demands:

  • From reservoir to refinery and beyond: the role of LR Senergy for industry
  • NEW insight – Sensor applications on tension risers
  • NEW insight – Pipeline noise and vibration analysis
  • NEW insight – Launching all-new simplified Offshore Rules and industry guidance

The addition of specialist support services brought into the fold of Lloyd’s Register Energy with several recent acquisitions in US and Europe, including Aberdeen based LR Senergy, is delivering increased service provision for clients faced with a changing energy mix, changing technology and an increasingly complex regulatory and safety conscious environment.

“While industry is getting smarter at managing the performance of its key existing assets, there is still a long way ahead in adopting new innovations that better secure future oil recovery. We hope our insights for industry and the media will encourage the debate around change,” highlighted James McCallum, CEO of LR Senergy.

80% of the world’s offshore rigs are surveyed by Lloyd’s Register Energy’s drilling services business. Recent acquisitions, drilling training academies, R&D Global Technology Centres and technology based JIPs are evidence of Lloyd’s Register Energy’s ambition to enhance the safety and reliability of the oil and gas industry. It has an enviable track record in the UK, Dutch and Norwegian sectors.

Bakken said: “Safety must remain industry’s first priority and improvement must be a constant. We are looking to the future on how safety will change through technology and innovation, where safety will drive the best performing companies.”

Lloyd’s Register Energy’s insight in to current energy challenges supports the theme for the ONS Exhibition and Conference. Visit Lloyd’s Register Energy at ONS Exhibition (Stavanger), on Booth #38.
