C-MAR launches new dynamic positioning training facility in China

C-MAR, an international marine and offshore services provider, and the Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) have officially launched the Dynamic Positioning training facility (DPC-SMU) at a ceremony in Shanghai, China.

C-MAR will provide dynamic positioning (DP) training to Chinese nationals and vessel operators in the offshore oil and gas sector.

According to C-MAR, with 50% of the world’s crude oil passing through the South China Sea and an increase in oil & gas exploration and production activity, the need has never been greater for more domestic operators to be able to work in deep waters and challenging environments.

C-MAR has trained 45% of the world’s dynamic positioning operators, and was chosen by the SMU after careful consideration, the company said in the press release.

SMU Vice President Yang Wanfeng, C-MAR Group Chairman Chris Hawdon and President Ron Murray were joined at the opening ceremony on the university campus on Saturday, April 25, by industry, academic and business figures including Chang Fuzhi, deputy director-general of Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, the Deputy Director General of the Shanghai Salvage Bureau, Jin Yongxing, General Secretary of the SMU Party Committee, the British Consul General in Shanghai, and the Executive Director of China-Britain Business Council.

C-MAR Chairman, Chris Hawdon, commented: “The launch of DPC-SMU is a considerable achievement for C-MAR and will see the expansion of our world-class engineering and marine services to the Chinese market. In the higher education offered by the SMU, C-MAR recognises a shared commitment to industry safety and an equally impressive track record for reputational excellence. We look forward to many years of success and accelerating the development of the China market through this significant partnership in meeting China’s urgent demand for DP training.”

Acting Dean of the SMU, Professor Hu, commented: “As the first joint venture established in China through cooperation between a higher education institute and a well-known corporation, it will be a win-win situation not only in meeting China’s urgent demand for DP training, but also to help to enhance the influence of the Nautical Institute in China’s maritime industry.”
