CNOOC picks Wood Group for South China Sea gig

UK-based energy services company Wood Group has been awarded a new contract by the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) to support the Lingshui 17-2 gas development in the South China Sea.

Wood Group said on Thursday that it would provide subsea and flow assurance services under the contract, “effective immediately.”

The company added that the execution of the contract would be supported by Wood Group’s offices in Perth, Australia, and London.

Also, an independent review for the development’s subsea production system design and a special study and design for its gas export pipeline will be delivered.

Bob MacDonald, CEO of Wood Group’s Specialist Technical Solutions business, said: “We will leverage our vast experience providing robust and innovative solutions to tackle challenges related to deepwater activity. Our commitment is to deliver high quality, safe and efficient services and we look forward to working in close collaboration with CNOOC to enhance their vision for their first deepwater project.”

According do WoodMac, Lingshui 17-2, located in the Qiongdongnan basin some 150 kilometers south of Hainan, was the first discovery CNOOC has made as operator, using its own semi-submersible rig and crew.

Lingshui 17-2 was a matter international attention back in 2014 after CNOOC deployed its Haiyang Shi You 981 rig to drill at the discovery which is an area of the South China Sea disputed between China and Vietnam. This happened again in early 2016 for a similar reason.
