Crane vessel on LNG is a conscious choice, says Sleipnir Project Director

Sipke Schuurmans, who is the Project Director of Heerema’s Semi-Submersible Crane Vessel ‘Sleipnir’, currently under construction by Sembcorp Marine in Singapore, will give an update on the Sleipnir newbuild project as part of the OEEC 2016 Technical session: Gas fueled offshore vessels.

“As part of its vision to be frontrunner in the offshore industry in implementing sustainable values, Heerema made a conscious choice to be an early adopter of LNG fueling, even before it was fully known how the infrastructure for offshore LNG bunkering would develop,” says Schuurmans ahead of his presentation at Offshore Energy next week.

In order to limit its environmental footprint, SSCV ‘Sleipnir’ will be equipped with a dual fueled (LNG and MGO) power generation plant. In his presentation, Schuurmans will address some unique design and bunkering aspects related to the use of LNG as marine fuel on board of a dynamically positioned construction vessel that normally stays offshore for long periods of time.

Whether prompted by environmental regulations, by financial incentives or both, shipowners and shipbuilders are increasingly considering alternatives for heavy marine fuels.The session “Gas fueled offshore vessels” will cover the market supply and advantages of LNG and GTL as marine fuels as well as the regulatory and technological challenges associated with increasing the use of cleaner marine fuels.

This technical session is organized in cooperation with: LNG World News and Netherlands Maritime Technology (NMT) and will be moderated by Roel de Graaf, Managing Director of Netherlands Maritime Technology.
