DNS organises offshore decommissioning course in Norwich

Following a successful launch last year, decommissioning industry body Decom North Sea (DNS) will deliver its first training course in Norwich on 30 April and 1 May, sharing their vast offshore decommissioning experience with the east of England.

The two-day interactive course, delivered in partnership with Decomareus Ltd, will give participants an overview and understanding of the key issues across a decommissioning project, utilising lessons learned from the broad decommissioning experience the trainers have gained from their combined 105 years in the industry.

Recognising the skill base in the Norwich area, in particular the growing number of people with transferable skills entering the oil and gas industry, DNS designed the course for anyone working in, connected to or with an interest in decommissioning, including operators, contractors, regulators and the financial services sector.

The programme has already received positive feedback from a number of its Aberdeen based sessions. It covers a full spectrum of decommissioning topics, from legislation and stakeholder engagement to removal and lift operations, and participants will be challenged on how things can be done differently, concluding with small groups debating ideas of how the industry can become more efficient.

Brian Nixon, Chief Executive of DNS, said: “We are delighted to offer this programme to the east of England. The course provides a fantastic opportunity for industry newcomers, as well as those currently working in the sector and looking to expand their knowledge. By sharing a broad understanding of the decommissioning industry, participants are able to identify demand for their skill set which may be out with their specialist area.”

The course, entitled ‘Decommissioning: From Planning to Execution’, was first delivered in Aberdeen in November 2013. One of its attendants was Nick Andrews, General Manager of Axis Energy Projects Ltd.

He said: “As was to be expected from Decom North Sea, its course proved to be a detailed and very informative two days. It was great to hear about the whole breadth of decommissioning experience from three experienced and knowledgeable practitioners.

“Coming from a relatively small company within the decommissioning supply chain, it was really helpful to be able to place our experiences into the broader picture from an oil company perspective. Although I knew about several aspects of decommissioning, I now understand the context and where they fit within the overall process.”

DNS introduced the course to give an overview of offshore decommissioning activity, and covers decommissioning legislation, safety and environmental issues, identifying best practice and improvement opportunities across the field.

DNS has grown since its inception in 2010 to have more than 230 members drawn from operators, major contractors, service specialists and technology developers. With annual decommissioning expenditure in the North Sea heading upwards from the current £1billion within a few years, DNS was set up to tackle the main areas of weakness, which are inhibiting decommissioning supply-chain capability.

Decommissioning: From Planning to Execution, will be held at Holiday Inn North in Norwich on 30 April and 1 May. To book a place, or for more information, visit www.decomnorthsea.com or contact Jennifer Mann on jmann@decomnorthsea.com.
