Former Maersk boss joins BP’s board

British oil major BP has chosen former A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S CEO, Nils Smedegaard Andersen, as its latest addition to the board of directors.

BP said on Tuesday that Andersen would begin serving on the board as a non-executive director and on the Audit Committee with immediate effect.

To remind, Maersk announced in June that Nils S. Andersen would be leaving the company and that the new CEO would be Søren Skou.

Carl-Henric Svanberg, Chairman of BP, said: “I am delighted to welcome Nils Andersen to the BP Board. Nils brings broad experience from the energy, shipping, and consumer goods industries. His depth of knowledge and insight from his long career will bring an added perspective to the work of the Board.”

Andersen was part of A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S since 2005, first as Member of the Board of Directors and subsequently as Chief Executive Officer since December 2007.

Before joining Maersk, he was the Executive Vice President of Carlsberg A/S and Carlsberg Breweries A/S from 1999-2001, becoming President and Chief Executive Officer from 2001-2007.

He is a non-executive director at Unilever and Unilever NV, where he serves on the Audit Committee, he is also Chairman of Dansk Supermarked Group A/S.

Previous roles include non-executive director of Inditex S.A. and William Demant A/S. He has also served as Managing Director of Union Cervecera, Hannen Brauerei and Chief Executive Officer of the Drinks Division of the Hero Group.

Also on Tuesday, BP reported the company’s profit for the third quarter 2016 dropped due to a weaker price and margin environment.
