Guardian Geomatics deploying unmanned surface vessels for Shell survey

Australian marine survey company Guardian Geomatics has been awarded by Shell a large hydrographic project utilizing a fleet of unmanned surface vessels.

The project is to acquire high quality hydrographic data over an area in excess of 800km2. The project will utilize up to three unmanned surface vessels and be supported by partner Ocean Infinity’s ship the Seabed Constructor.  The Seabed Constructor vessel – currently moored in Senegal according to AIS data – will act as a “mother ship.”

Steve Duffield, Commercial Director said “We take this opportunity to thank Shell for their award, and their belief in this new technology and methodology. By using unmanned surface vessels instead of a conventional vessel, Shell is able to reduce the onsite data acquisition time by a factor of 3. ”

In a separate statement, Ocean Infinity confirmed it is taking part in the project. Ocean Infinity acquired a 25% stake in Guardian Geomatics in March 2019.

Oliver Plunkett, Ocean Infinity’s CEO, said: “We are very excited that we continue to be world leaders in the use of technology in scale for seabed survey and on this occasion in particular whilst working with our trusted partner Guardian Geomatics to deliver a service to Shell…This announcement reaffirms the reasons we partnered with Guardian, a dynamic and pioneering company, very much aligned with the vision of Ocean Infinity.”

Offshore Energy Today has reached out to Ocean Infinity, seeking info on the location of the reported survey. We will update the article if we get any response.
