Offshore worker killed in Gulf of Mexico identified

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), an agency under the United States Department of the Interior, has identified the offshore worker who died in an incident on a platform in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

The bureau said on Monday it continues its investigation into the March 10, 2016 death of Roy Miller, a Nabors Drilling offshore worker.

The fatal injury took place on the Nabors platform rig during maintenance activities for Whistler Energy.

The circumstances that lead to the fatal injury of the workers still have not been revealed.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the family of Roy Miller,” said BSEE Director Brian Salerno.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. We are committed to determining the direct and indirect causes of this incident.”

BSEE Gulf of Mexico Region Director Lars Herbst has formally established an Investigative Panel. The four-member panel is comprised of a BSEE special investigator, an investigator, a well operations inspector, and an engineer. According to the BSEE, the panel will conduct a thorough investigation of the incident in order to identify the causes and any contributing issues that led to the death of Miller.

The bureau of safety added that the panel will make recommendations in the final report on how to strengthen implementation of existing safety and environmental management systems and any necessary reforms to existing regulations. The focus of these recommendations is to prevent a similar incident from occurring, the BSEE concluded.
