PHOTO: McDermott makes headway with Pemex platform construction

U.S. engineering and construction company McDermott is making progress with the construction of the Abkatun-A2 platform for the Mexican oil company Pemex.

According to a Monday update on McDermott’s social media channels, the company has started the top deck lift of the Abkatun-A2 platform at its Altamira facility in Mexico. The facility is positioned as a free trade zone and provides fabrication services for the Gulf of Mexico and Americas.

McDermott was awarded a $454 million contract from Pemex for engineering, procurement, construction & installation (EPCI) of the Abkatun-A2 platform in June 2016. The platform will be located in Mexico’s Bay of Campeche in 124 feet of water and will provide replacement and expansion capabilities to the existing Ku-Maloob-Zaap, Cantarell and Ayatsil facilities.

The first steel for the Abaktun-A2 platform was cut in September 2016, marking the beginning of fabrication activities. Offshore activities are scheduled to start in 2018 and handover to Pemex is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2018.

For the installation part of the project, McDermott will use its dynamically positioned, heavy-lift and deepwater lowering vessel, Derrick Barge 50, and the float-over installation vessel, Intermac 650.

In related news, Mexican oil company Pemex on Monday got a new chief executive officer, the second one to be appointed in less than two years.
