‘Safe Boreas’ sailing towards Lundin contract

Safe Boreas, a newly built offshore accommodation rig owned by Prosafe, is on its way to Norway. The rig was named at a ceremony in Singapore in October last year.

According to the owner, Prosafe, the flotel was delivered from Jurong Shipyard in Singapore earlier this month. The rig is currently sailing through the Strait of Malacca a narrow, 805 km (500 mi) stretch of water between the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

Prosafe has described its Safe Boreas flotel as “the most advanced and efficient harsh environment accommodation rig in the world,” with facilities for 450 persons in single man cabins, a DP3 (dynamic positioning) system as well as a 12 point mooring arrangement.

Safe Zephyrus, the sister vessel to Safe Boreas, should be ready for operations in the North Sea during the summer of 2015.

In a press release issued today, Prosafe has said that Safe Boreas is currently in transit to Norway, where it is scheduled to start a contract with Lundin Petroleum in connection with hook-up and commissioning of the Edvard Grieg production platform, offshore Norway.

Prosafe has recently warned on an increased uncertainty regarding the short-to-medium term market development for the accommodation units, but added the positive long-term demand outlook remains unaffected with prospects of increasing need for offshore accommodation services related to maintenance and upgrades of an aging production infrastructure, hook-up and commissioning of new facilities and decommissioning of old fields.
