Australian energy company Santos has started drilling the Dorado-2 appraisal well located offshore Western Australia.

Dorado and Roc South reside in WA-437-P, which is operated by Santos with Carnarvon as a partner with a 20% interest.

The Noble Tom Prosser jack-up drilling rig was mobilized from the Corvus-2 well location to the Dorado-2 well location on April 26.

Carnarvon said on Friday that, since arriving at the Dorado-2 location, approximately 2.2 km from the original Dorado-1 well location, the rig had concluded the ready to operate process and had drilled the surface hole and installed the surface casing.

The rig will drill the 17 1/2” hole to the planned section depth of approximately 1,200 meters Measured Depth (MD) followed by setting the 13-3/8” casing.

Dorado-2 is the first appraisal well of the Dorado oil and gas field which was discovered in the latter half of last year. Dorado-1 discovered hydrocarbon bearing reservoirs in the Caley, Baxter, Crespin and Milne Members of the Lower Keraudren Formation.

The Dorado-2 well is located approximately 160 km north-northeast of Port Hedland in the Bedout Sub-basin.Drilling is in approximately 95 meters water depth.

Following the Dorado-2 well, the rig is scheduled to drill the near-field exploration well Roc South-1 followed by the Dorado-3 appraisal well.

Roc South is within close proximity to Dorado, just 13 kilometers away from the Dorado crest and is estimated by Carnarvon to contain 74 million barrels of oil equivalent. The prospect has a relatively high chance of success of 63% and given its proximity to Dorado. Success could result in this structure being developed alongside the Dorado field.

Following Roc South-1, the final firm well of the 2019 drill campaign will be the Dorado-3 appraisal well.

Dorado-3 plans to include drill stem tests will assist with reservoir performance and obtain fluid samples required for the design of the Dorado production facilities.
