Statoil gears up for Brazilian drilling campaign

Norwegian energy giant Statoil is about to start drilling on the Carcará discovery offshore Brazil, using a Seadrill-owned drillship.

According to information obtained by Offshore Energy Today from a Statoil spokesperson, the Norwegian company is about to start a drill stem test on the Carcará discovery and then drill the Guanxuma prospect in BM-S-8 license in the Santos basin offshore Brazil.

After that, Statoil is planning to drill one well in Carcará North, with the flexibility to drill further wells if required.

Statoil entered the Carcará discovery in 2016 through an acquisition of Petrobras’ interest in the BM-S-8 offshore license that contains a substantial part of the oil discovery.

The spokesperson added that Statoil will be using the Seadrill-owned West Saturn drillship for this activity.

Statoil hired the drillship for its Brazilian campaign back in July 2017. The agreement included two contracts where Seadrill Offshore would provide the drillship West Saturn and Seadrill Serviços de Petroleo Limitada would provide services on board.

The West Saturn is a 6th generation ultra-deepwater drillship, built in 2014 and equipped to drill in water depths of up to 12,000 feet (3600 meters).
