Statoil to drill Johan Sverdrup appraisal with ‘Deepsea Atlantic’

Norwegian oil company Statoil has received consent from the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) to drill an appraisal well at Johan Sverdrup field, offshore Norway, with the Deepsea Atlantic rig.

Statoil is the operator of the Johan Sverdrup field, in the North Sea, around 140 kilometers west of Stavanger. The field is under development and production is planned to start in 2019.

The PSA has given consent to Statoil to drill the appraisal well 16/2-22. The consent also applies to a possible sidetrack from this well.

According to the safety agency, drilling is scheduled to begin in December 2016 and estimated to last 30 days. Water depth at the site is around 110 meters.

The well will be drilled by the Deepsea Atlantic rig, which is a semi-submersible drilling unit of the MODU GVA 7500 type. The rig is operated by Odfjell Drilling. Deepsea Atlantic was completed in 2009, registered in Norway, and is classified by DNV GL.

Deepsea Atlantic was issued with an Acknowledgment of Compliance (AoC) by the PSA in July 2009.
