Thousands call for removal of Airbus 225 Super Puma helicopter from service

More than eleven thousand people have signed a petition calling for the EC 225 Airbus Super Puma helicopter to be retired, following the fatal crash on Friday in Norway.

The CHC-owned helicopter was on its way back from the Statoil-operated Gullfaks B platform, when its rotor loosened and detached mid-air, and the aircraft crashed into a small island in Turoy, near Bergen. All thirteen people aboard the ill-fated aircraft died.

The petition at Change.org, is calling for all the aircraft of the same type to be retired.

Below it the text of the petition as issued on Change.org:

“This petition is for all North Sea Offshore Oil Workers and their families, and the public at large, to finally say enough is enough with the Super Puma airframe. In signing this petition you are asking for the Airbus 225 Super Puma to be permanently removed from service as its been involved in one incident too many, where yet again fatalities have occurred, and you wish to express a vote of no-confidence in the safety of this airframe. We call on the CAA to put the lives of Offshore Oil Workers and the pilots before vested interests, and revoke the air worthiness certificates for this aircraft. Failure to do this will result in more needless deaths.”

Once the petition reaches 15.000 signature it will be delivered to Civil Aviation Authority.

Meanwhile, civil aviation authorities both in Norway and UK have grounded all the helicopters of the type, except those used for search and rescue operations until further notice.
