Total finds oil at Trell prospect (Norway)

TOTAL E&P Norge AS has discovered oil at its 25/5-9 well on the “Trell” Prospect in licence PL102 F/G in the Norwegian North Sea in the Paleocene Heimdal Formation.

The well intersected 19 metres of net pay in excellent quality Heimdal reservoir, in a location close to existing infrastructure. Wireline logs and pressure data have confirmed a hydrocarbon contact and samples of oil and water were acquired for further analysis. According to Ithaca Energy, which was the first to run the news on the discovery, preliminary estimates made by the Total place the size of the discovery at between 3.1 and 12.5 million barrels of recoverable oil.

The well was drilled using the Leiv Eiriksson semi-submersible drilling rig to 2240 metres true vertical depth subsea and encountered a 21 metre gross oil column. The discovery was made in a mature area of the Norwegian North Sea, within approximately 10 kilometres of the Heimdal production hub.

This is the first exploration well in production licence 102 F. The licence, which was recently carved out of another production licence, 102 D, was awarded on 10 October 2013.

As for the Leiv Eiriksson, the rig will now proceed to production licence 420 in the northern North Sea to drill appraisal well 35/9-11 S, where RWE Dea Norge AS is the operator.
