Venezuela to export Dragon offshore gas to Trinidad and Tobago

Venezuela and Trinidad & Tobago have signed a gas supply deal, whereby Venezuela will export gas from Dragon field offshore Venezuela to Trinidad and Tobago.

The deal was signed this week by Minister of Petroleum and President of Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA) Eulogio Del Pino and the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Keith Rowley.

PDVSA said on Monday that the agreement entails the construction of one or more gas pipelines from the Mariscal Sucre area in Venezuela to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

The interconnection to export gas will be established from the Venezuelan Dragon field to the Hibiscus platform in Trinidad and Tobago. Another potential route will be evaluated from Güiria, Sucre state, to Point Lisas in Trinidad.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said: “We are working on our maritime borders with blocks of gas. We have reached agreements for their joint exploitation, taking advantage of the strengths of both nations for a win-win. This is what we call Bolivarian Peace Diplomacy. Through dialogue, we seek to develop common interests.”

Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Keith Rowley described the signing of the agreement as ‘a historic development that will improve relations between the two nations.’

The Dragon field is part of the Mariscal Sucre Project which includes four fields located offshore the Paria Peninsula. The Dragón, Patao, Mejillones, and Río Caribe fields, located around 25 miles offshore Paria at a water depth of 328-427 feet, hold an estimated 1,200 million standard cubic feet of gas.
