VIDEO: Mooring the largest floating facility ever built

Oil company Shell has launched a video of its giant Prelude floating LNG (FLNG) unit being moored at the Browse Basin offshore Australia.

After a journey of nearly 6000 kilometers, the giant vessel arrived from a shipyard in South Korea to Australia in late July.

Following the FLNG vessel’s arrival to its offshore location at the Prelude field, the unit was secured with sixteen mooring chains pre-positioned on the seabed and then lifted and secured to the facility in mid-August. Shell has now released the video detailing the mooring process.

Next up is the hook-up and commissioning phase of the whole production system which is expected to take between 9-12 months.

The largest floating facility ever built will unlock new energy resources offshore and produce approximately 3.6 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year. Once operational, the 488-meter-long and 74-meter-wide floating facility will produce liquefied natural gas for the next 25 years.

The Prelude FLNG project is operated by Shell in joint venture with Inpex (17.5%), KOGAS (10%) and OPIC (5%).
