Water leak on Songa’s Cat D rig

A water leakage on board Songa Offshore’s Cat D rig Songa Encourage has prompted an investigation to identify the cause of the incident.

The drilling contractor said on Monday, January 2, 2017, that a water ingress was observed in a pump room on board the Cat D semi-submersible drilling rig Songa Encourage.

The drilling unit is presently working for Statoil on the Heidrun-field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. At the time of the incident, the rig was not in operations, as it was waiting on weather. The water leakage was stopped and the rig was stabilized. There were 79 people on board the unit and no one was injured. The crew mustered according to standard procedure, Songa noted.

The company’s emergency response team was mobilized and was in continuous contact with Statoil and the relevant authorities. The company has initiated actions to identify the root cause of the incident.

During December 2016, Songa Encourage achieved an operational efficiency of 92% and an earnings efficiency of 88% for the month, working for Statoil in Norway. The rig performed three days of planned maintenance as well as being on waiting-on-weather rate for extended periods during the month.

A DP-3 or moored harsh environment semi-sub was designed for year around drilling, completion, testing and intervention operations. It is equipped for up to 500 meters water depth, and the design allows for future deepwater and arctic operations which can be implemented by minor upgrades.
