Wintershall Norge selects Oceaneering to support West Mira rig in Norway

Oceaneering International has recently secured a drilling and completion support contract for integrated services with Wintershall Norge.

It is worth mentioning that Wintershall Norge’s parent company, Wintershall, has just completed the previously announced merger agreement with DEA, creating Wintershall Dea, a company deemed the largest independent exploration and production company in Europe.

Oceaneering said on Wednesday that the contract covers ROV services for the drilling unit West Mira, which will perform production drilling on Wintershall-operated fields on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, including Vega, Nova and Maria fields, and exploration drilling.

Wintershall awarded a firm 6-well contract to the harsh environment drilling rig West Mira back in June 2018. The contract with Wintershall was supposed to start in March 2020 however, the rig’s owner in November decided to take early delivery of its newbuild semi-submersible rig West Mira as a result of new options exercised under the rig’s contract with Wintershall. Following the new option, the rig’s start date was moved to the fourth quarter of 2019.

Finally, in a statement on Tuesday, the rig owner Northern Drilling said that Wintershall had elected to exercise the fourth and final front end option for West Mira, bringing the start of operations forward into mid 3Q 2019.

Oceaneering’s contract duration with Wintershall is for three years with two, two-year options to extend.

Oceaneering will provide ROV-services including installation of hangar systems, remote onshore mission support services, BOP tethering systems, subsea landing bases, ROV tooling and engineering services.

Erik Sæstad, VP & Country Manager – Norway, said, “We are delighted to have won this contract with integrated services where we leverage our products and service portfolio and provide a lower cost solution as well as a reduced carbon footprint and reduced HSE risk as the operations will be supported from the Oceaneering’s Mission Support Center in Stavanger.”

In related news, Oceaneering and offshore driller Pacific Drilling recently entered into an industry-first, five-year digital services package agreement to digitally transform Pacific’s drilling fleet. This will allow the provision of emerging services such as remote ROV piloting, surveying, and automation aboard Pacific Drilling’s high-specification drillship fleet.
